Karun Nair: The Forgotten Genius Rewriting His Destiny

Karun Nair’s journey in Indian cricket invokes mixed feelings given the blank opportunities presented to him. Indian cricket is well known for its blatant player disregard that often favors opportunity-rich talents or even worse, utilized underexploited resources like Nair, who in 2016, became the only Indian cricketer besides Sehwag to achieve the impossible, i.e., a legendary triple century (303*) under his name. Today, what stands amidst the noise is Nair’s epic tale of grit and defiance enforcing “Where there is a will, there is a way”.

In what would later become the monumental day of Indian cricket – the nation witnessed a young athlete with the vision to change the dying spirit of this oh-so-stressful game. Thriving on a work-related voyage, Nair smacked the English enemies for a staggering 303*. It’s inexplicable becoming the youngest batsman in history to score 300 runs and especially when you are a fan of the Indian cricket team. But what stood even more outsized was the fact that it was also his maiden century and debut in England.

Every debut comes with perks and rewards, but in this case for Nair – Barred from additional matches, accompanied alongside a national commotion and whirlwind of inactivity.

In striking contrast to most cricketers who enjoy being part of the squad after such a performance, Karun Nair was made to sit on the bench. His batting average of 62 during his Test career was commendable, but he was still dropped and did not have a regular place subsequently. Indulging in cricket’s bafflement, this was the crudest move in the ruthless competition that existed in Indian cricket.

But Karun Nair never made a single complaint. He did not seek out the media to lambast the selectors. Instead, he returned to the domestic circuit with a quiet determination to prove no, make that, to show that he belonged.

Nair’s talent sets him apart, but more importantly, is his unusual drive and discipline. In the 2024-25 season, after shifting from Karnataka to Vidarbha, Nair regained his form. Not only did he break records, he dominated the Vijay Hazare Trophy where he amassed over 500 runs without getting out, a world record, which included three consecutive centuries.

Yet, what stood out was the transformed way in which Karun Nair approached the game, having blended his awe inspiring athleticism with flawless execution. He lost weight, became even more aggressive, and built unbeatable mental fortitude. The determination he showcased was apparent to all.

The narrative of Karun Nair in April 2025 is intriguing. When called up to help Delhi Capitals as an injury replacement, expectations were quite low. But in a crucial game against MI, Nair walked in and single handedly turned the game around by scoring 89 runs from 40 balls.

Nair showed no fear, even against bowlers of the caliber of Jasprit Bumrah. His composure, shot selection, and especially his ability to clear the boundary brought memories to many of the prodigy who once belted 303 runs not out. It also renewed hope of his bid back into the Indian selectors’ scheme of things.

Outside of cricket, Nair is equally as subdued. Having gone through turbulent times in his personal life, marrying Sanaya Tankariwala and welcoming son Kayaan, happy moments offer Nair newfound motivation. This newfound stability off the field, many believe, has aided his resurgence greatly.

Rather, many would’ve faded, Nair worked his way out. He was never in the spotlight, but came back to be the topic of conversations through perseverance.

There is still a long way to go and 33 is just a number for Nair. After his onslaught in domestic cricket and his rise in IPL ranks, there is fresh chatter of including him back to the national squad after a noticeable break. The narrative is highly competitive, but Nair has proven time and again that unrivaled determination will change the odds in his favor.

In a nation infatuated with fresh skills, Karun Nair is a blast from the past still simmering with ambition. He is not merely making a return—he is retelling his narrative.
